As I suspected, there is not a version of inform for the Apple II, either compiler or interpreter. Apparently, there was a version for the //gs, but I don’t have one.
I’m looking for something that when all is said and done, I can run the result on an Apple //c, //e or AppleWin.
While looking for this information I ran into a group, I had either missed or forgotten about, comp.sys.apple2.programmer, which looks like a good place to learn.
I figure that interactive fiction is equal parts language parser, database management system and game. Something like Inform would have let me concentrate on just the game.
On the positive side, I don’t have to do things the way somebody else wants in order to make the software work.
My biggest problem at this point is to focus on a small, clean Apple II game.
If I let my mind wander a little I could see writing kind of an interpreter for the Apple II and a separate set of programs for a different system to create the game, much like the original Infocom games. Maybe writing the database generator for my 11/70 emulator and downloading the files to the Apple II. This would be an interesting cross platform project, but way beyond the time available.
