Creating a Bootable ZIP Disk for your Macintosh Plus

Creating a bootable ZIP disk for your Macintosh Plus

Start with the following equipment:

  • Macintosh Plus Model Number M0001A
  • Iomega ZIP 100 SCSI  P/N Z100S2
  • one blank ZIP 100 disk
  • one blank 800K floppy

and the following software:

Apple OS 6.0.8 (4 disk set 800K, write protect these by opening the little plastic door on the other end of the disk from the silver piece)

  • System Tools
  • Utilities 1
  • Utilities 2
  • Printing Tools

Iomega Driver 4.2 (800K, write protect this)

Switches on Iomega ZIP drive

Termination On

SCSI ID 5

Create Startup disk.

Boot MacPlus with Macintosh System Tools.

Open the System Tools Disk.

Double click on installer.

Click OK on the welcome screen for the Apple Installer.

Click Eject Disk on the Easy Install screen to Eject the System Tools disk.

Insert a blank diskette.

If the Mac asks to initialize the disk, choose two-sided, Erase and name this disk (I used Startup).

Click Install on the Easy Install screen and from here you just keep feeding the Mac the disks it asks for.  (In my case each of the OS 6.0.8 disks and the startup disk.)

When the installer tells you it was successful, click on Quit.

Add Iomega driver to startup disk

Under Special, choose shutdown and when the disk is ejected put in your new Startup disk

Click on Restart.

When the Mac is restarted double click on the Startup icon.

Choose eject under the file menu and put in the disk with the Iomega driver.

Double click on this disk’s icon to open it.

Drag the driver from this disk onto the startup disk’s System Folder.

When the copy is complete close both open windows

Create bootable ZIP disk

Under Special, choose shutdown.  It will ask you to switch diskettes and then shut down.

Put the new startup disk in and click on Restart  (When system is booting, you should notice an icon for Iomega on the bottom left corner of the screen)

When the Mac is booted insert the blank ZIP 100 disk.

If asked go ahead and format the ZIP disk.  (If you have access to a PC with a ZIP drive format it as a PC disk first.  That way nothing will be on the disk that you don’t put there.)

Click on Erase if asked.

When asked, name your disk, I used Main Drive for mine.

Click of the icon for the Startup and choose Eject under the file menu. (From here on should look familiar.)

Insert the System Tools disk and open it.

Double click on installer.

Click OK on the welcome screen for the Apple Installer.

Click Install on the Easy Install screen and from here you just keep feeding the Mac the disks it asks for.  (In my case each of the OS 6.0.8 disks and the startup disk.)

When the installer tells you it was successful, click on Quit.

Add Iomega driver to ZIP disk.

Click on the System Tools icon to highlight it and choose Eject under the file menu.

Put in your Startup disk

Double click on the ZIP disk icon to open it.

Double click on the Startup icon.  Then double click on the System folder folder of the Startup disk to open it.

Drag the Iomega driver from this disk onto the ZIP disk’s System Folder.

When the copy is complete close the open windows.

Under the Special menu choose Shut down.

Remove all the diskettes and push in the ZIP disk and click on restart.

Your MacPlus should now boot up using the ZIP drive as a system hard drive, without any other diskettes.

Once you have tested your ZIP disk to make sure it boots properly, you may not need the startup diskette, but it is handy to have around if you need to set up another ZIP disk.

Thanks very much for the directions. Will this also work with a 2GB Iomega jaz drive? Also where would one get the four Mac OS 6.0.8 disks?

I can’t say one way or the other about the Jazz drive. I bought the disks from RecueMyClassicMac. I’ll put up a link.
