It’s Friday night and when I started to write this I had no idea of what to write. I laid down and checked the usual message boards and came up with no new ideas, so I took a short nap.
When I got back to it, I used Google Blogs to look for other blogs, but nothing grabbed my attention until I came across a video on Vimeo of a group of people starting up an Apple //c with Oregon Trail. It was posted in September of 2007 and looks like it was from that time.
What struck me about that video was how much fun they were having starting up that old machine (20 plus years). They were all ready to play this old game, even with its lack of full motion video and high resolution graphics. No first person shooter here. It was good to see that not all enthusiasts were around when the Apple II was born.
A little more looking around on Vimeo found more videos. One I found interesting was a talk given by the development team of The Oregon Trail. They discussed some of the challenges to developing a significant program for a machine such a small resource footprint.

I never played Oregon trail until this year, having gone through school just before the personal computer revolution as it were. I enjoyed it, but I suspect I would have enjoyed it even more back when it came out. Fresh from my time using teletype terminals, decwriter and vt50 text only terminals, using an Apple II with graphics would have been amazing.
