IFComp

After my little side trip with MACHID in the last couple of days I’ve come to realize that my plan to write an adventure program for the Apple II had hit a snag.

I had originally planned to write it with ZBasic.  Based upon my recent experience with ZBasic, I’ve decided that it may not be possible to write it in that language in the time allowed.  The problem being, I was aiming at something I could fit on a single 140K diskette.  I don’t feel I could achieve this goal at this time.  I’m going to continue this years entry for IFComp on the PC.

I still think it would be fun to create such an adventure for the Apple II.  I just have to choose the right language.  ZBasic is pretty, but bloated.  Applesoft is not so pretty and structured is not part of its description.

An option that I haven’t seriously considered would be assembler.  Years ago I bought Apple’s ProDOS Assembler tools and played around with them.  I think I may have to dig them up and see if I can make them work for me.  My experience with assembler is practically null.  I don’t remember if I ever even created a fully working program.

If nothing else I have a learning experience or two ahead.

kind of going from one extreme to another, for the middle road look at a c cross compiler like aztec or a pascal that runs on the machine

I have Kyan Pascal and have been working with it. I’ve written small programs in both c and Pascal on the PC. The main reason I mentioned Assembler was most of the software written for the Apple II seems to be written either in Applesoft or Assembler.
