Apple //c as a Terminal, Part 1A

Today I didn’t have a lot of time for this project.  I got tied up with a Windows network problem instead.  I have a mix of Windows 7 and Windows XP machines and they have decided not to play nice.

I thought I’d cut some corners and just try to connect to my Windows 7 laptop instead.  You know just download a communications program and set it up with the serial port.

Apparently it has been awhile since I’ve tried to use a modem for something other than the internet.  I looked for quite awhile for a communications program.  No luck.  If you know of any, let me know.  It was much easier for the Apple //c, with a choice of several programs to download.

I know at one point I used Procomm and that worked well.  That like many other packages no longer exists.  I’ll have to follow that other article and do it step by step and see how that works.

I did something I thought was amusing, I downloaded ZLink for the Apple //c, but before I tranferred the image to the Apple //c, I loaded it into AppleWin and tried it to see if it was the same ZLink I have used in the past.  It would start to boot then stop.  I downloaded from a couple of different sources with the same results.  Then I checked the settings of AppleWin and sure enough there was a problem on the first tab. Next to serial port on the configuration tab I had none selected.  I changed it, and ZLink booted right up.  It was the one I was looking for so I transferred it to the Apple //c.

There is some discussion on using an Apple IIe as a terminal in The New Apple II User’s Guide, but it’s based on using Mac OS X, so it may not be too much help for you with Windows.

I have putty on all my machines. I have not used it for something like this. I’ll have to look into it. Thanks.
