Emulation and Age

As I get older, the eyes aren’t what they used to be.  Can you say trifocals?  I can still drive without them, but its easier to wear them on long drives.

My Apple //c has a 9″ monitor, which by today’s standards is pretty small.

I mentioned in an earlier post using AppleWin, which, until recently, meant using a window quite a bit smaller.  My 14″ laptop used a window about the size of a 3×5″ card.  You could go to full screen, but then you lost the control icons on the right.  I’ve been using an older copy and just found they added a feature to change the screen size.  You can toggle to 2x size using the F6 key.  So now, that 3×5″ card is a 6×10″ window with much bigger type (same number of columns and rows).  I believe they added this in 1.20

In a separate, but related note, I use terminal programs to connect to emulated mini computers of the PDP 11 class.  I used to use putty as my terminal program which made a similar small window but if you went to full screen the type size stayed the same but you ended up with like 50 lines instead of 24.  I still use putty for some stuff, but have switched to CryptoTerm if I want to actually do some work/play.

I watch eBay on fairly regular basis.  In one add, I saw a modern monitor being used with a //c.  I wrote to the seller and explained that although I was not interested in the //c, I was interested in what monitor he was using.  He was excited by it too, as he had just discovered the ability to use it for the Apple.  He very nicely replied with the model and make of the monitor.

It was a Dell 2001fp.  This monitor has inputs for vga, dvi, s-video and composite video.  I found one and liked it so much I bought another.  I have one on my desktop and one attached to my laptop docking station and sometimes my //c or //e.  They have a built in usb hub and you can add a sound bar to the bottom of the screen.
