I started at the beginning last night and downloaded the two main hall disks. I made then both bootable by deleting the player manual and copying prodos and basic.system to them. I used the Graphics Main Hall for a quick reference, having played before, and knowing that I preferred the non graphic version of the main hall.
If I were to change anything about this system, it would be the main hall. I would like it more, if it were like the rest of the system, using word commands instead of menus and single letter commands. It would end up with more varied play, less linear. You could have some mini in-hall quest like stories in order to get your stats and equipment. Maybe, someone would evaluate you and if you didn’t like the stats, you could wrestle or fight them for better ones.
You could be issued some sort of medieval dog tags that would act as a key, to exit the main hall.
Maybe choosing a bathroom to identify your sex. You know something like:
You have waited as long as you can and must make use of the rest room. To the north is the Men’s room and to the east is the Women’s room.
As most know it’s easy to play quarterback from your couch. The system works quite well in spite of what I think of the main halls. Even the very simple BEGINNER’S CAVE was fun to play.
Anyway, I created a new character, bought a sword and headed off to the:
BEGINNERS CAVE
The Beginners Cave is done in all caps and 40 columns, which makes it a little harder to read. Right off the bat, I met the local knight marshal who OKed my entry to the cave.
Shortly, after, I met a Hermit and some rats. The Beginners Cave is teaming with residents, not all of them friendly. I won’t say more about the residents or activities of the Beginners Cave, because I would spoil the adventure of finding your own way.
I have to say, I thought I was doing well, until I died. That’s part of the fun.
