I started going through the diskettes that were in my tote, that I dug out the other day. What a disorganized mess. There were two of the diskette trays, two of the plastic boxes that hold around 10 diskettes, and two of the cardboard 10 pack boxes that diskettes used to come in.
It turned out one of the cardboard boxes and most of one of the plastic boxes had old 360k IBM diskettes.
I started up the Apple //c with the PRODos utilities program and started sorting the diskettes by doing a catalog of each side.
I used four piles, Infocom games, correctly labeled diskettes, blank diskettes, and more research diskettes.
The other cardboard box was mostly blank diskettes.
The first section of the first tray was Infocom games; Zork I, II and III, Planetfall, Plundered Hearts and others.
The next section of the tray was about 4″ which I whittled down to about 10 or 15 diskettes that needed more research. These diskettes usually had an unclear label or when I went to catalog them, they came up with an error. The PRODos utilities sometimes has a problem reading some copy protected software, which caused an error under PRODos. I’ll have to try booting each of these diskettes and see what happens.
At this point I still have about 2/3 of this tray and all of the rest of the next tray to sort out. I have found enough blank 5 1/4″ diskettes, that I won’t have to buy any for quite some time.
The moral here is when you are working with diskettes, make sure they are clearly labeled before you put them away.
